Goosebumps Series Overview

Everyone learns to enjoy reading in their own unique way. Some people start by being read to as kids, others might become mesmerized by an interesting cover or title that they simply can’t resist. There are truly endless ways to begin your own journey into the world of books, but whatever road you choose to take will surely lead you on your own incredible adventure.

R.L. Stine is one such author that specializes in getting people to delve into reading for the first time. Many people, myself included, were fascinated by the colorful and spooky artwork on the cover of Stine’s books. They grabbed your attention and made you wonder just what lay within those pages. As a kid I remember being both excited and a little scared as I sat down with my first Goosebumps book. I thought to myself was it going to be too much for me? Would I even be able to finish it? Fortunately I quickly conquered my initial fear and began my own journey into the world of Goosebumps.

Stine began writing at the age of 9 at his hometown in Ohio, after he found an old typewriter in his attic. He soon began writing stories and joke books that he would later hand out at school. This hobby would soon turn into a lifelong passion when Stine graduated with a degree in English from the University of Ohio in 1965. During his time at school Stine was an editor for The Sundial, the school humor magazine. After graduating he went on to move to New York City in order to pursue his dream of becoming a writer.

Interestingly enough, Stine initially seemed more inclined to writing jokes than spooky children’s books. After his time writing jokes in college he would then go on to create a humor magazine called Bananas in 1975. While writing for the magazine Stine would also publish dozens of joke books under the name Jovial Bob Stine. A pretty surprising origin for the author of Goosebumps if you ask me.

Stine wouldn’t go on to write his first horror novel, Blind Date, until 1986. He then continued to write a variety of horror, humor, science fiction, and even combinations of the genres. It was only in 1992 that Stine began writing the first Goosebumps book. The series immediately took off and lead a large number of endorsements and adaptations that ranged from TV series to video games. By the time he was finished with the series in 1997, 140 million copies had been sold and over 400 million by 2008.

It’s clear to see that Stine is certainly most famous for his best selling kids books, Goosebumps. As a kid I read many of his books and enjoyed them immensely. As an adult I’ve moved onto other books, but in order to better understand Stine and his work I decided to revisit Goosebumps. This way I could see just how well they hold up over time.

I spent some time looking through a good number of Goosebumps books. They looked just as I remembered, bright, colorful, and just plain good at drawing you in. I went through many different books in the series trying to pick the one that grabbed me most, and eventually choose The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb

The book follows the journey of a young boy named Gabe as he spends his Christmas vacation in Cairo with his family. The story begins to take off at the families hotel back in the city. Gabe’s parents are planning a trip to Alexandria, which will take a couple of days, and Gabe is given a choice to join them or stay and visit his Uncle. Uncle Ben is an archaeologist that specializes in the ancient Egyptian history, but much to Gabe’s displeasure Uncle Ben is joined by his spoiled daughter, Sari. So this easy decision becomes quite the dilemma as Gabe must decide if dealing with Sari is better or worse than being bored stiff with his parents.

Ultimately, Gabe chooses to go with his Uncle. Soon after his parents departure we are introduced to the pair as a bandage wrapped Uncle Ben comes barging through the door trying his best to scare his nephew. Gabe is naturally terrified, but is soon brought back to reality as his Uncle and Sari burst into laughter after their successful prank. I thought it was funny that even though Stine was writing scary kids books he still found a chance to slip in some humor.

After some initial greetings the group head out to the pyramids where Uncle Ben is conducting his research. Uncle Ben tells Gabe that the Pyramids are home to hundreds of tunnels that hide the most valuable artifacts in a kind of maze. Sari of course brags that has already explored the place and takes every chance she gets to rub Gabe’s nose in it. Once inside Uncle Ben introduces them to his very reserved colleague Ahmed, who warns the group of an ancient curse that resides within the pyramid.

Uncle Ben assures the two that no such curse exists, but soon he is called away because two of his workers have become mysteriously ill while working. Gabe and Sari are left at the hotel, but Sari soon encourages Gabe against his better judgement yet again to join her on a trip to a nearby museum.

The pair make it the museum, but soon  realize they are being followed by Ahmed, Uncle Ben’s colleague. He tells them they must accompany him back to the hotel, because Uncle Ben has returned and his furious with them. They follow Ahmed to his car, but he takes a wrong turn past the hotel and Gabe and Sari begin to worry. Ahmed then begins whispering about the curse of the tomb and how Uncle Ben has defiled the place. Gabe and Sari realize they are being kidnapped and hop out of the car at the next stop. They manage to make it back to the hotel where an angry Uncle Ben demands an explanation. They two tell him about the museum and Ahmed, which confuses Uncle Ben immensely.

Uncle Ben tells them that they all must return to the pyramid so that Ben can resume his research. They arrive at the pyramid, and yet again Sari has the brilliant idea of going exploring. She gets Gabe on board with the magic word “chicken” and they set out into the tunnels once again. This time however, Gabe gets lost and finds himself falling through the floor of a weakened tunnel.  Below the tunnel are numerous caskets and a table in the center of the room. This room in particular was a preparation room where the mummies were prepared.

Fortunately, Gabe is found by Sari who makes her way down into the hidden chamber, but soon they realize they were followed by none other than Ahmed. He is angrily babbling about the curse and how they must pay the price for interfering. Uncle Ben then enters the scene trying his best to reason with Ahmed, but is knocked unconscious by his crazed colleague. Ahmed declares that he will be the one to fulfill the curse and pulls lage knife from his bag. Knowing that they are all in danger Gabe pulls out his lucky charm that he bought during the trip, a small shriveled mummy's hand that the he was told is some kind of Summoner. Ahmed is strangely terrified of the hand and shrieks as the coffins begin to open and mummys step out to protect Gabe. They make quick work of Ahmed and return to their slumber. Once they rouse Uncle Ben the group make their way out of the pyramid and make their way back to the hotel safe and sound.

It was truly a pleasure to return to such a childhood favorite of mine. It was clear to see why I loved these books so much growing up. They are easy to follow and become invested in. I can truly understand why these books have been so loved by children for many years and hopefully many more to come. Stine himself has said that for him the best part of writing is that through his work kids “Have discovered reading. This is the thrilling part for me”. I find this to be very moving. Here you have a writer who finds joy and purpose not through the creation of great and complex works of literature, but simply by inspiring another generation to start reading.
